SUSTAINABILiTY

At UDA, sustainability is at the heart of who we are.

Committed to the principles of sustainable development, we emphasize transparent reporting, responsible animal care, and meaningful contributions to the economic and social well-being of our communities.

Family-Farmed. Future-Focused.

Founded and owned by Arizona’s dairy farming families, the original stewards of our land, water, and animals. For generations, our members have prioritized environmental care while producing the highest quality dairy products.

Paloma Dairy

Paloma Dairy and Sunset Farms are owned and operated by the Van Hofwegen family, a fourth-generation dairy farming family in Gila Bend, Arizona. The farm is dedicated to sustainability and animal care, using innovation and technology to achieve best practices.

The Van Hofwegen family also owns Sunoma Renewable Biofuels, a facility that turns manure and other farm waste into clean energy. This process helps the farm reduce waste and reuse valuable resources. To conserve water, they use advanced watering and management systems designed to minimize waste. Beyond their farm, they actively support renewable energy by serving on local energy boards and working with community members to improve energy use and management.

When it comes to animal care, Paloma Dairy uses sophisticated computer systems to monitor the health and wellbeing of their livestock. They also use genetic testing to enhance the health of their animals. By making animal care and sustainability central to their business, Paloma Dairy continues to adopt new innovations that keep them at the forefront of responsible farming.

Triple G Dairy

Triple G Dairy is a multi-generational, family-owned farm committed to excellence in milk quality, sustainability, animal care, and leadership within the dairy industry. Now owned and operated by brothers Ben and K.C. Gingg, the farm’s legacy began in California before relocating to Arizona in the early 1950s. What began as three separate dairies has since evolved into one unified farm in Buckeye.

Triple G Dairy integrates sustainability across all three pillars: environmental, social, and economic impacts. On the farm, Triple G utilizes a methane digester, has strong water recycling efforts, prioritizes animal health through preventive care, and invests in continuous workforce training. These efforts are driven by a long-term vision for environmental stewardship and community impact.

The team at Triple G believes that a culture rooted in responsible animal care and proactive farm management is essential to reducing environmental impact, supporting people, and ensuring the dairy remains resilient for generations to come.

How we do it

community

At UDA, our employees don’t just work hard on the job; they also make a difference in the community. Last year, our team embraced the spirit of service by donating blood, packing food bags, assembling hygiene kits, feeding children in need, and cleaning up local streets. Together, we serve nearly 200 volunteer hours, living our values and supporting the communities we proudly call home.

CNG

In August 2024, we launched our first Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) truck on the road to lower emissions from our milk hauling fleet. Since then, UDA has put 31 CNG trucks into service that use Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) sourced from a partner landfill digester. This fleet transition will have positive impacts on communities, reduce emissions, and save costs.

byproducts

UDA proudly diverts 99.6 percent of our waste from landfills through reuse and repurposing. Our farms feed cows brewers grains, a protein-rich byproduct of beer brewing. We also use Mother Lactose Liquor (MLQ), a leftover from lactose processing, to nourish calves and heifers at our member farms.

Digesters

Some of our farms use methane digesters to turn manure and other waste into renewable energy. They play a key role in UDA’s waste diversion and resource management:

  • Capture methane and produce biogas for on-farm use or sale to local utilities.

  • Generate electricity that replaces power from the grid.

  • Recover resources by separating water for irrigation and solids for use as fertilizer.

animal Care

Healthy cows mean high-quality milk. That’s why our farmers work closely with veterinarians and nutritionists to ensure comfort, balanced diets, and proper care—supported by advanced cooling systems for Arizona’s warm climate. With 100% participation in the National Dairy FARM Animal Care Program and employee training through DairyKind, we are committed to the highest standards of animal care.

Accountability

At United Dairymen of Arizona, we are committed to dairy and about doing our part for the planet. We recognize that cows and our operations contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, and we take that responsibility seriously. That is why we have taken steps to reduce our environmental impact across everything we do. Progress has been made, but we know the work does not stop there. We are continuing to explore new technologies, partnerships, and ideas to support long-term sustainability across the entire dairy supply chain.

We are proud of adopters of the U.S. Dairy Stewardship Commitment, a voluntary pledge to demonstrate sustainability progress through industry-aligned action and reporting in the areas of environmental and social sustainability.
