Why Are Dairy Farmers Dumping Milk?

Apr 4, 2020

The nation is watching as farmers make the heart breaking decision to dump their milk. Just like any other ‘crop’ in agriculture, there are blood, sweat, and tears involved in running a farm. Probably more tears this week.

But how did we get here?

We started 2020 with a positive outlook and stable markets. Customers and bottlers ordered milk based on their projections for the week. Dairy farmers work to make enough milk and ensure they aren’t overwhelming our balancing plant.

Then the panic market came.  News of the coronavirus creates panic. Shoppers buy more groceries than normal. While there is enough milk, it is taking a little longer to restock shelves than normal. Grocery stores put limits on staples, like milk, to ensure all customers are able to get food.

Now we are in the total market slowdown. Hotels and restaurants have decreased sales and schools are out of session. This combined with peak production season, is a recipe for disaster.

We are working to find opportunities to donate milk and ensure that stores have lifted limits. But for now, milk has nowhere to go but down the drain.

How can you help?

  • Grocery stores should have lifted purchasing limits but if you see a store that still has signs up, please snap a picture and DM us so we can work to rectify the situation.
  • Buy a gallon, or two! Stock up on all your dairy favorites to enjoy during quarantine. (Our farmers thank you in advance!)
  • Donate milk to Feeding America Food Banks in your area at https://arizonamilk.org/great-american-milk-drive/
