Arie and Mary Spruit have been in dairying all of their lives. They were both raised on dairy farms in Holland. They were married in California where they were in dairying for six years. In 1960, they moved to Arizona, living in Gilbert for five years. About nine years ago they settled in their present location. Creamline Dairy in Chandler, where they milk 300 Holsteins.
The Spruits have seven healthy and lovely children, ranging from 11 to 21 years of age. They have six girls and one boy. Mary stated, “when you have girls, boys will come later. Sure enough, we got a fine son-in-law this past June when our daughter Pauline got married.”
The children all have their chores, helping with the dairy work. The family travels to Holland quite often to see their families. Mary and Arie both lived in Holland during World War 2 and according to Mary they didn’t always have the right kind of food for a well-balanced meal, but there was always plenty of good fresh milk since both of them lived on dairy farms.
Mary enjoys sewing and makes many of her family’s clothes. Her house plants and cooking also keep her busy.
