Another second generation of our dairy families is featured this month; Patrick and Nadine Dugan. Patrick (Pat), son of Mike and Delores, spent the first nine years of his life on a dairy farm in Wisconsin. IN 1962 his family moved to Arizona, where his father, Mike started another dairy operation with 44 cows. Mike has been dedicated to teaching Pat and his five brothers the finer points of being a successful dairyman.
Pat joined FFA while attending Chandler High school and became very involved n their activities. He was selected as “State Dairy Farmer” for his activities on his father’s dairy farm, which led to his becoming an “American Farmer” in 1973, the highest degree possible in the FFA organization.
Pat also married Nadine in 1973. They have two children, Sean 3 1/2 and Kelly 20 months. Nadine was born in Iola, Kansas and moved to Chandler in 1962. She’s a graduate of Chandler High School and Rose Mar Beauty School. Nadine enjoys playing tennis but her priorities are being a good mother and farm wife. She also sews and crochets. The Dugans are also active in the Catholic Church.
At one time Pat worked for his father managing calves and learning cow management. His older brothers had already started their own dairies. As a result, Pat had the opportunity to work closely with this father, whose herd had expanded to over 1,000 cows by 1975.
In August, 1979, Pat bought 300 milk cows and leased his father’s first diary, which was built in 1964. He renamed it Du-Brook Dairy. Du- standing for Dugan and Brook for Nadine’s maden name of Brooking. He hopes to build a successful dairy operation.
